- How
do I order my Perfect DNA art?
Click here to request your order kit. Simple
follow the instructions that we will mail you an order kit and then
you follow the instructions and return your mouth sample to us.
- I
live outside the UK is this a problem?
We can ship anywhere in the world, however your sample would degrade
if shipped cross-Atlantic. Please contact us and we can find a way to
fulfill your wishes. If you live in Europe we simply require that you
express ship your mouth swab sample to us, before it degrades.
- How
do you extract the DNA from my mouth swab?
The laboratory technicians process your sample and extract your genetic
DNA fingerprint, using a process that requires several complex steps:
- Isolation
of DNA
- The DNA is recovered from the cells in your mouth swab sample,
by a combination of extraction operations using micropipets, microcentrifuges
and a vortex mixer.
Amplification - A special "polymerase
chain reaction" (PCR) is used to amplify the DNA.
- Cutting,
sizing & sorting
- Special "restriction enzymes" scissor your DNA in certain
places. An enzyme called EcoR1 will cut your DNA only where the
GAATTC, combination of proteins occurs. The DNA chunks are sorted
to size order by electrophoresis, a bio-molecular sieving process.
- The DNA pieces
pass through a gel made from a seaweed derivative called seaweed
agarose. This effectively screens and sieves the DNA pieces further.
- Transfer
of DNA to nylon -
By soaking the distribution of DNA pieces overnight on a special
gel, the DNA is transferred to a nylon sheet.
- Probing
- Coloured probes are added to the nylon, these highlight certain
genes and bring out the pattern in your Perfect DNA art.
- Also - Our graphic designer studio
digitally enhances your genetic fingerprint.
- What
do these bits represent?
Each of these lines represents a different gene. In the Perfect DNA
fingerprint 35 genes are mapped. The intensity of each lines colour,
it's thickness and position, are all unique to you.
- Is
my Perfect DNA definitely unique?
There will be certain similarities between all people. However those
of a familial origin will be significantly similar. Your DNA is unique,
and is contained in every single cell in your human body.
- What
does "DNA" stand for?
Imagine having a dinner party and pointing up to your new Perfect DNA
art on the wall, and a guest asks you what the acronym means. You stand
there humbled. It is: Deoxyribonucleic acid.
- What
does "DNA" mean though?
The chemical information molecule used by most biological systems. It
is a string of adenosine, cytosine, guanosine, and thymidine nucleotides.
Phew! Human DNA has 3 billions nucleotide bases.
- Can
you assure me that you don't pass on my DNA fingerprint to any other
agencies?
Not even the laboratory technicians are aware of who's DNA they are
processing. All records of your DNA are destroyed and we deliver to
you on CD the only digital copy of your genetic fingerprint. It would
be illegal for us to pass your DNA records to any agency without your
consent.
- Why
is bio-technology so trendy at the moment?
Well we've been everywhere on this planet, we've started to explore
space. Yet, we still don't fully understand what goes on inside the
human body. Genetics represents a whole new frontier for understanding
the nature of the human being, and the question of life.
- How
many genes are there in the human body?
There are over 30,000 genes in the human body. In 2001 the Human Genome
Project, a consortium of over 1000 scientists worldwide, finished sifting
through the 3 billion bits of DNA in each human cell to map the ordering
all of the human genes.
The next phase is an interpretation phase, which will take a lot longer,
to work out what each gene is and does. To create effective gene therapies,
your own personal treatment based on what each gene is and does, will
take even longer. We've come a long way baby, but there still a lot
more to be done.
- Can
I get someone else's DNA and send them a Perfect DNA art as a present?
Anything
involving DNA processing requires the
individuals
consent. So you couldn't legally process someone's DNA without his or
her knowledge. We ask you to sign a consent form when you return your
sample to us. You can still offer a Perfect DNA art as a gift and arrange
pre-payment with us.
